In a sense, he said with a chuckle, he and his father Alan, a “frustrated rabbi” and an anesthesiologist, are alike be- cause “we both put people to sleep.” There is nothing funny, however, in the communal work he has been en- gaged in since 2022. That iswhenNas- sau County Executive Bruce Blake- man, amember ofWeinstock’smodern Orthodox congregation, named him to chair the county’s Task Force on An- tisemitism. The task force’s purpose is to study the causes of the rise of an- tisemitism in the county and to make recommendations later this spring on how to deal with the problem. Weinstock, 48, is dead serious about his role in steering the task force’s work. While antisemitism, the rabbi said, is on the rise nationwide, until recently Nassau County had seen fewer Jew-hating incidents compared to the rest of the country. “We live in a fairly good place,”Weinstock said. That appears to be changing, how- ever. Nassau County police reported 45 hate incidents against Jews in 2023, compared to 35 the year be- fore. In Suffolk, police said there were 48 such incidents in 2023, more than double the 19 in 2022. “We’re living in a society that is angry,” saidWeinstock. “As a result, you end up with antisemitism.” The task force held a public hear- ing in May 2023, at which more than a dozen speakers addressed the issue. Many of them said there was a growing need for increased security in synagogues. Jewish students, however, made the most impact. As Sofie Glassman, a high school sophomore who asked not to be fur- ther identified, told the hearing, “Since the beginning of high school, antisemitism is something I have faced almost daily.” She told the hearing that Holocaust jokes had be- come routine, and swastikas were often painted in bathroom stalls. Experts say that such incidents have increased even more since Isra- el went to war against Hamas in Gaza after it killed 1,200 Israelis and took about 240 hostages on October 7th. C ounty Legislator Arnold Druck- er, a Plainview Democrat, said the antisemitism upticks predate the Gaza war. He began noting them, he said, in 2019.
