JEWISH WORLD
JEWISH WORLD • NOVEMBER 18-24, 2022 25 Rabbi Joachim Prinz spoke right before King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech at the Washington Mall in 1963. Before one of the largest pro civil rights gatherings in our country’s history, Prinz be- gan his remarks with the words, “I speak to you as an American Jew.” Then, with brevity worthy of an Abraham Lincoln address, he spoke of the universal wisdom of his tradition: “We share the profound concern of millions of people about the shame and disgrace of inequality and injustice which make a mock- ery of the great American idea. “As Jews we bring to this great demonstration, in which thousands of us proudly participate, a twofold experience — one of the spirit and one of our history. “In the realm of the spirit, our fa- thers taught us thousands of years ago that when God created man, he created him as everybody’s neighbor. Neighbor is not a geographic term. It is a moral concept. It means our col- lective responsibility for the preser- vation of man’s dignity and integrity. “From our Jewish historic expe- rience of three-and-a-half-thousand years we say: “Our ancient history began with slavery and the yearn- ing for freedom. During the Middle Ages, my people lived for a thou- sand years in the ghettos of Europe. Our modern history begins with a proclamation of emancipation. “It is for these reasons that it is not merely sympathy and compas- sion for the black people of Amer- ica that motivates us. It is above all and beyond all such sympathies and emotions a sense of complete iden- tification and solidarity born of our own painful historic experience.” T here is a profound, elevating power in those words and in the actions so many American Jews have taken to live up to them. That’s why it saddens me that what is true “Jewish power” gets totally lost in the too-often ex- pressed notion that Jews own the world, that Jews run the world. I saw parts of the documentary “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America!” the link to which to which Kyrie Irving posted on Twitter and which triggered the controversy surrounding him. I saw in the film the demonizing of Jews and outrageous lies denying both Jewish biblical history and the Holocaust. Someone should encourage Irving and Kanye West to watch another film, of Rabbi Prinz’s heartfelt solidarity speech from the 1963 march. These two young Black men both say they want to share their “light” with the world and that they seek a higher level of understanding. They can start by learning more about a deeper power that is any- thing but sinister — the one root- ed in the universal wisdom of the Jewish tradition. Then they can tweet the link to Rabbi Prinz’s speech to their millions of followers on Twitter. Emile Zola was compelled to speak out in 1898 because of the Dreyfus case, in which French-Jew- ish artillery officer Alfred Dreyfus was falsely accused of treason, pub- licly stripped of his rank and sen- tenced to life imprisonment on Dev- il’s Island. He was innocent and had be n fram d y anti-Semites. Nirenstein was driven to “cry out” over the extrao dinary global cognitive war against Israel and thew y inwhich the “good people,” especially the hu- man rights activists and organizations, have all signed onto modern blood libels in the name of “human rights.” Nirenstein is passionate, angry and ex- ceptio ally eloquent.
